eUpdate News
October 2011
Wow, it has been wayyyy too
long since the last eUpdate! I am working to find
more time to get back to a regular schedule of eUpdates.
But for now, there is plenty of Pointer news and pictures to share.
Kim
Homecoming is Oct. 14th at
PLHS vs Hoover.
Varsity game starts at 6:30. (JV is at 3.)
Join us for football under the lights
and Walk with the Alumni as we lead off
the Homecoming parade! (This has become an annual event for alumni and our
numbers grow each year. Join us as we bring the true spirit of Homecoming
to PLHS.) Join us on the field just before halftime. Look for the banner.
Get your tix to the game early! Homecoming has sold out the last couple of years….seating
is limited tickets may not be available at the door. Tickets available from
the Financial office on campus (619 223-3121 or www.pointlomahigh.com
for info.)
PLHS Alumni website: www.plhsalumni.org
It's
all about Alumni!
Over the past few years the website where Pointer Alumni resides has changed
names several times…which has been confusing at best and we decided we need
to have our own spot forevermore.
So, we are very excited to announce
that this summer we moved our PLHS Alumni web page to it’s own site dedicated just to
Alumni info! www.PLHSalumni.org
Give us your input to make this site what you want it to be. You will notice
the changes already made, and as time goes by we will add links to photos,
video interviews with Alums, and anything else YOU submit or ask to see. Reunion
and event info will continue to be posted here. And because so many Pointer
classes now have Facebook pages, we will post those
links as we get them (please send us your class’s Facebook address.)
We also have a new email address: pointers@plhsalumni.org. Add it to your contacts
for Alumni info.
What our Alumni have been up to:
This summer the Classes of 1951,
61, 66, 71, 76, 81, 86, and 91 held reunion events. Several classes
took tours of the campus (oh, the stories we hear on those tours!) On the right, Class of 61 sits in one of the remaining original
classrooms (the old math building) during a tour led by Head Football Coach
Mike Hastings, 2 Pointer student ambassadors, and the Alumni Director.
More pictures of Class of
61 tour.
PLHS Alumni Baseball Game:
Early
in the season, the Pointer team met one of PL's perfect game pitchers, Don
Larsen, who was in town to be guest of honor at the Baseball Booster's
annual event.
The Alumni vs Students
game was played on May 7th (after the original date was rained
out.) David Wells, our other perfect game pitcher, pitched for the Alums
and made sure that each Pointer team player got a chance to hit against him. Pics of Alumni Baseball
The alumni ended their day at The Reunion, (the old
Mac’s pub on Voltaire St.) which recently reopened under new ownership (PL
alum Bill Reis.) Stop by for a game of pool and check out the memorabilia
on the walls. You never know who you will run in to.
PLHS alumni baseball players, including
David Wells, celebrate a great Alumni vs Student
game at The Reunion.
Gotta Sing Gotta Dance: Larry Z reports that The HALL OF FAME exists in its entirety! Thanks
to TED CAPLANERIS, CLASS OF 83 (owner of THE OLD TOWNHOUSE RESTAURANT in
O.B.) who is archiving every photo, video, DVD, newscast, etc - including
the documentary that students made about the Hall of Fame (featuring many
former students and staff members) - and the CNN, CBS, etc - broadcasts about
the program - all are available on FACEBOOK (http://www.facebook.com/groups/GottaSingGottaDance/) (Gotta scroll down a ways to get
to the videos posted earlier this summer.)
The Cliffs, Scott ’73 and Mark ’74 Preece’s band has
been playing small San Diego venues with a growing group of Pointers enjoying
their music. Check plhsalumni.org for future dates.

What's new on Campus?
Last spring the new building
at the top of Voltaire was dedicated and students spent second semester learning
history from classrooms with start of the art technology equipment and a view
of the ocean. Also in that building, a Sports Medicine room accessible from
the football field, with rehab and exercise equipment.
The much anticipated conversion of the old woodshop building broke gound. This building will house the new Music Center for
the award winning PLHS Vanguard band, and a Media Production facility.
The weight room project, funded with Prop S money and a generous grant from
the Jimmie Johnson Foundation has begun.
The PLHS football track is now accessible to the public for weekend use.
The Spirit of the Pointer sculpture has become a centerpoint of
the quad. A new tree has been planted behind the sculpture. Artist Richard
Arnold happened to be in town paying the Pointer a visit this summer when the
Class of 61 was on campus.
Alumni Directory Update project
Keeping track of 85+ years
of Pointer grads (over 32,000 records) can be challenging. Our relationship
with Harris Connect allows
us to maintain our alumni database in a secure online directory, and to communicate
with our alums via a broadcast email system. They give us these services free
of charge. Every five years we contract with Harris Connect to do an update
of our records. They have the resources to search for lost and relocated alums
and to contact alums to confirm that the information we do have is current
and that individual privacy preferences are in place. You will receive a post
card from Harris Connect on our behalf, followed by an email or phone call.
Please take a moment when you receive the postcard to contact them
and confirm your information. This service is hugely helpful to us in keeping our records current
so we can provide the best information possible to reunion chairs, and keep
you in contact with PLHS and your classmates.
Get Involved with PLHS Alumni!
We are refocusing the Alumni Committee
to help to make what we do for Pointer Alumni relevant and interesting. It
is important to ensure that our PLHSAlumni.org webpage, eUpdate news, events,
and even our reunion info reflect what our alumni want to know. And we need
the input of other Alums to make that happen. We will keep the committee
fun (a couple of fun meetings per year to talk about what we feel is in
the best interest of Pointer Alumni.)
Contact Pointer Alumni email if you want to be involved. We promise it will be Alumni
fun!
